Rachel Conklin: Selected 10/2008
First ASEL Solo: 9/2009
Passed Checkride and Earns Private Pilot – ASEL: 12/2009
CFI: Robert Spearing V
After earning her private pilot certificate, Rachel began taking her family and friends for flights around the Orange County, NY area. In the summer of 2010, she used her certificate to fly her family to Block Island, RI, for a memorable day at the beach.
She continued her aviation ‘career’ by then earning her tail-wheel endorsement. After getting sufficient tail-wheel airtime courtesy of Henry Nixon of the Valley Soaring Club, she became a tow pilot for the same club and spent time in both their Piper PA-18 Super Cub and Piper PA-25 Pawnee.
Rachel was the recipient of the 2012 SSA Kolstad Award, the highest honor given to SSA Junior members. It is awarded for “demonstrating extraordinary enthusiasm for and commitment to soaring and a record of accomplishment and service to their local soaring community.”
She is the current President and her desire is to give the same opportunities in aviation to young individuals as were offered to her.
